How to care for your DMS/Varley Red Top Sealed Racing Battery

Pegasus Part Nos. 1173, 1174, 1175 and 1177-XXX
Safety:

As with most batteries, DMS/Varley batteries are always live, even when damaged or discharged. They must always be handled carefully with an eye toward preventing short circuits.

Always:
  • Remove all metal jewelry before handling or working near the battery.
  • Switch off the battery circuit before connecting or disconnecting the battery.
  • Use insulated tools.
  • Keep sparks, flame, and lit cigarettes away from the battery.
  • Wear protective gear such as gloves and eye protection.
  • Use a battery charger designed for 12 volt batteries.
Never:
  • Lift a battery by its terminals.
  • Charge a battery inside a sealed container.
  • Incinerate.
  • Short circuit the terminals.
Storage:

Batteries should be stored fully charged in a cool, dry environment with no risk of short circuit. DMS/Varley batteries should keep for up to 2 years at 68 degrees Fahrenheit with only an occasional charge. Some self-discharging will occur during storage, so the battery should be charged before being put into use. Deeply discharged batteries should be charged within 10 days.

Installation:

Use an insulated torque wrench to tighten the M6 terminal nuts to 35 inch-pounds (3.9 Nm). Dielectric grease may be used to protect against corrosion. Do not use a silicone grease.

Charging:

For maximum life, DMS/Varley batteries should be kept fully charged with a trickle charger set to approximately 2 amps. A higher setting on the battery charger can be used for a fast charge, but this will shorten battery life.

Maintenance:

Periodically check the battery case for damage. Keep the battery clean by wiping with a damp cloth AFTER the battery has been disconnected.

Disposal:

Do not incinerate old batteries or dispose of with other trash. Batteries should be taken to a licensed recycler for proper reclamation.
