Like having eyes in the back of your head helmet!
It's an issue from Le Mans all the way down to weekend track days: Mixed vehicle classes and riders/drivers of varying abilities sharing the track means that some will be faster than others. A lot of thes faster traffic vs slower traffic situations happen so quickly that the slower driver never sees the faster one approaching. Even seasoned, alert racers can get caught off-guard when the closing speeds are high enough.
The Garmin Catalyst R1 warns you of faster vehicles approaching or following in your blind spot. A small radar sensor (79mm x 27mm x 30mm | 3.1" x 1.06" x 1.18") gets mounted on the rear of your vehicle. Two indicator light units get mounted on your dash or handlebars. As a vehicle approaches, the indicator lights shift from blue to green, yellow, orange, and finally to red. When the following vehicle pulls out to pass, an amber blind spot LED will light up on the appropriate side to let you know where it is. No more guessing which direction to leave room!
The Catalyst R1 is designed for use on cars, motorcycles, even trucks. Effectiveness depends on conditions (rain is bad), the approaching vehicle's reflectiveness to radar (very small frontal area is more difficult to detect) and closing rate (0 mph to 34mph), and your vehicle's speed (sweet spot is between 15 and 93 mph -- perfect for the kind of short, twisty courses that don't give you a chance to check your mirrors between corners). You can tune the sensing distance and adjust the brightness using the free-to-download Garmin Catalyst Radar app on your mobile device (the app is not needed for regular use, but it does include more features that can be useful).
Waterproof (IP67 sealed) for outdoor use. Requires a 12 Volt DC power supply. Includes mounting brackets for the sensor and the light modules, screws and adhesive for the sensor mount, and zip ties for the cables.
Note: The Garmin Catalyst R1 is not a substitute for rear-view mirrors or basic situational awareness. Designed for racing use (not to be used as a backing-up warning system).
