This needle roller bearing supports the front of the layshaft in Hewland and Webster Mk 8 and Mk 9 gearboxes. Hewland part number HC9-234-1.

Note that 3 different size bearings have been used over the years, and all of them have a 22mm ID. The correct one depends on which main case is used:
This 30mm OD type (Hewland HC9-234-1) fits some late Mk 8 and most Mk 9 gearboxes built after about 1972*. It is retained by a single snap ring (sold separately).
The 28mm OD type (Hewland HC8-234-1) fits most early Mk 8 and some very early Mk 9 gearboxes from about 1969-73*. It is held in place by two snap rings.
The 35mm OD type fits very early Mk-series gearboxes up to about 1968* (including Mk 4 / 5 / 6 and very early Mk 8) and most Formula Mazda. Also fits the "Rhino" case retrofitted to some Mk 8 / 9. It is held in place by a retaining bolt which is visible from the outside of the case.

We also offer the matching Snap Ring separately (Part No. 1410-A68-1).

* Please note that date ranges are approximate and are given for information only. Hewland depended on parts supplied by VW and may have used an older case on a newer build. Also please remember that it is rare for a purpose-built racecar to survive 50 years with its original gearbox case.
