Compression and leak-down tests can sometimes miss signs of a minor leak that only opens up under load when the engine is hot. The 1758VT test kit from Beta Tools checks for lingering evidence of a cracked head or leaking head gasket.
The kit consists of a test manifold fixture and a special testing liquid that changes color to yellow or yellow-green in the presence of carbon dioxide. Install the test fixture in place of the cap on the radiator or expansion tank and fill one chamber of the manifold with the test liquid. Start the engine to allow vapors from the cooling system to enter the fixture. The manifold design percolates the vapors through the test liquid for maximum exposure. If the test liquid turns yellow-green, the coolant has carbon dioxide dissolved in it -- indicating leakage from the combustion chamber into the coolant passages.
Kit includes test manifold assembly, a container of non-toxic test liquid, and a disposal bottle for spent liquid. Everything comes packed in a protective blow-molded plastic organizer case. The supplied 250 ml (1 cup) of test liquid is enough for approximately 25 tests. Test fluid refills are also available.
