The Tillett B5 is a premium competition-style seat designed for dual-purpose street/trackday cars. The fiberglass shell is contoured to leave the shoulders free for unhindered steering, and the low thigh bolsters and flat headrest make it easy to get in and out.
Like all Tillett auto racing seats, the B5 draws on extensive experience in karting, where the seat is a working part of the suspension and must be a perfect fit to the driver. While other brands start with a rectangular shell and fill it with padding to fit the driver, the shell of the B5 is contoured to fit the driver without any excess padding. This allows more contact for better control, while also allowing the driver to sit lower than most other brands.
The B9 is already very narrow at just 44.5cm at the widest part of the rolled lip edge, but for the most cramped cockpits (such as Lotus Elise and Exige) Tillett also offers an "Edges Off" option which shaves 1.5cm from the overall width. Note that this option makes the seat a little less forgiving when getting in and out. The rolled edge also contributes some fatigue resistance, so the "Edges On" version should be chosen if at all possible.
Two shoulder harness slots and one sub strap slot allow the use of 4-, 5-, or 6-point autocross and racing harness, but instead of lap belt slots the sides are cut down for use with a stock 3-point seat belt as well. The 60° (from horizontal) seatback angle and nearly vertical headrest angle are compatible with a standard Model 20 HANS Device or Simpson Hybrid. Note: The seat sides vertical (not angled as on Tillett B6, B7, B8, B10, and C1), but the 230mm mount hole spacing prevents the use of more common 289mm brackets from competing brands. The B5 requires matching Tillett TBB5 or TBB5T mounting brackets (sold separately).
