Beta Tools Verniers, Calipers, and Depth Gauges

Calipers are designed to take accurate measurements of relatively small objects. They are designed to contact the sides of the object, which eliminates errors due to angularity (as you would get trying to measure the diameter of a ball using a tape measure or ruler).

Vernier calipers are a specific type which use a sliding scale. The operator must interpret the scale by matching up two markings. The tricky part is that the reference mark changes with each measurement. But their simplicity (only one major moving part) makes them ideal for use in less-than-ideal conditions. If you are willing to learn how to use them, Vernier calipers are a great choice for the track toolbox.

Dial calipers exchange the sliding reference marks for a gear-driven analog dial gauge. This type is easier to use than Vernier calipers, but more fragile. Dial calipers must be re-zeroed before each use, and their accuracy at larger measurements should be checked periodically. Dial calipers are a great choice for occasional use in a workshop setting.

Digital calipers are even easier to use than dial calipers and eliminate one more cause of operator error. They require the same periodic accuracy checks as dial calipers. The primary drawback to digital calipers is that they run on batteries. A dead battery means no measurement! Digital calipers are recommended for frequent use by operators who may not have time for training.
