The result weighs about one pound, which is most likely a lot less than your helmet. Choose FIA Post Anchors or M61 quick-release tethers, or SFI-only QC (quick-click) tethers. Tech Spotlight: Mid-Winter Driver's Gear Inspection

You're buried under a couple of feet of snow and ice. An arctic blast just went through and another one is expected in a few days. Even if the garage door wasn't frozen shut, it still wouldn't be a great day for working on the racecar. But you can get a head start on the upcoming season right from the comfort of your living room. The middle of winter is a perfect time to inspect your driver's gear!

Mid-Winter Safety Gear Inspection

Before you begin, please promise to be honest with yourself about the true condition of your gear. You might be able to sweet-talk a tech inspector, but you can't sweet-talk a fire. If in doubt, get a second opinion from someone who cares about your well-being. It doesn't have to be a racer. Spouses, parents, and bosses who want to see you at work on Monday can all be brutally honest when you're about to put yourself in danger.

Racing gloves aren't cheap, but they should be considered expendable. Do not expect one pair to last your entire racing career! Look for rips, worn areas, and pulled seams. Leather palms that feel stiff may crack the next time out.

"New enough" is not good enough if your helmet has been through the ringer. If it hasn't led an easy life, you should replace it before it expires.

Flame-retardant long underwear must be soft to be comfortable, but that also makes it fragile and difficult to repair. Check for fraying, holes, and pulled seams.

Don't try to race with a pair of shoes that look like they came from a cartoon hobo, toss them in the trash.

Does your suit still fit? (No, they really don't shrink after the holidays.) Does it have any tears, split seams, worn Velcro, or missing teeth on the zipper?

Head and Neck Restraint

If you don't have one, check your racing organization's latest rule book. They are required by more and more clubs. If you already have one, examine the tethers for wear.

Miscellaneous Supplies

How is your stock of earplugs and tear-off shields?

Once you know what you need, place an order for it sooner than later! It will be Memorial Day before you know it, and then it might be too late to get your new helmet painted or your new suit customized. If you order now, you'll beat the rush.
